Painting Hacks: Interior Painting Dos and Dont’s

Interior Painting Dos and Dont’s

The sudden surge in the sales of paint shows how people are taking advantage of their time during the pandemic. Painting is one of the inexpensive ways to improve the look of your home, but it requires the right paint formula, technique, and preparation to do it properly. In this article, we’ll share with you the dos and don’ts in painting the interior of your home.

Interior painting: Dos

Identify the type of paint on your walls

Bring a peeled-off paint from your wall to a paint center to have it checked. This step is very crucial so that you’ll know if the paint that you will buy will stick to the existing paint on your walls. Doing so can prevent you from wasting money on the wrong type of paint materials.

If your home was built before 1978, the paint used for the house might contain lead and pose health risks to you and your family. Painting over a wall with lead is not enough and you may need to hire a lead abatement contractor to remove it permanently.

Test colors to compare your expectations versus reality

Paint can change in color when applied on walls or over a darker color. So first, try to paint the colors on a small part of your wall or a wooden board and see if the color matches your expectations. From there, you’ll know the color adjustments and the number of coats needed to get your desired results.

Check if you need to use a primer

Some walls need an extra coat of paint or a primer to hide certain imperfections. You may need a primer if your wall is:

  • Bare and porous surfaces like newly built walls, woodwork, or bricks
  • Heavily stained
  • Dark-colored
  • Painted with a glossy finish

Painting porous surfaces like bricks will need a primer

Invest time in paint-proofing your home

Painting can be messy but splatters can be managed by using masking tape, newspapers, and drop cloth to cover everything around your work area. More time spent on paint-proofing means less cleaning time. So make sure to spend extra time to seal the covers properly.

Interior painting: Don’ts

Don’t base the amount of paint you need on assumptions

There is a proper estimation formula to know the amount of paint you’ll need. Ending up with either too much or insufficient paint is not the best way to do your DIY project. Use a paint calculator to help you with the paint estimation so you can have the right amount of paint that you will need.

Don’t leave the paint uneven

A specific technique in painting is to make sure that the roller brush absorbs the paint on all sides. On the first roll, avoid rolling the brush in one direction twice. Roll like a pro by making sure that on the next roll, you will move it a few inches to the left or right to scatter the paint evenly on the wall.

Don’t keep it all to yourself: Ask for professional help

Painting your home may seem like a simple task, but considering the preparations and work involved, it is a labor-intensive task. If you feel that painting is too overwhelming for you, remove the burden off your shoulders, and ask for help from professional painters.
